What is the Am I Nima demo?

The Am I Nima demo is a free, standalone Steam download that previews the opening of the full game. It starts with Nima tied to a chair in the basement and follows her through the first meal, the first night and the beginning of the second day.

HO! Games describes the demo as Chapter 1 and roughly half of Chapter 2. It is not a separate side story. It is the actual opening, including a final sequence that leaves the player with more questions than answers. The demo ends at a deliberately scripted point rather than a complete chapter resolution.

The demo originally launched on February 23, 2025. It received a Mac build in March 2025 and multiple small patches. At the time of our November 6, 2026 check, the demo still had an Overwhelmingly Positive review summary with 98% of 738 reviews positive. That is a snapshot, not a permanent score.

What is included

The demo introduces the two halves of the game: exploration and interrogation. You begin with two words, Nima and Stranger. Combining them gives you Mom, which unlocks the first dialogue option. This tutorial is also a tiny thesis statement: the game’s first act of empathy is the act of recognising your captor as a person.

From there, the demo opens into:

  • The opening basement conversation and a meal test;
  • Nima’s bedroom, with trophies, books, plushies, a fish and a locked locker;
  • A bathroom scene and a look at the family’s domestic routine;
  • The first “proper” test of the next day, built around the shark plush and the fossil;
  • A final sequence that closes the demo on a hard narrative beat.

The demo lets you explore objects between conversations and build a sizeable vocabulary. The word web can be pushed beyond the shortest route, which is why different players end up with different interpretations of the same scenes.

How long does the demo take?

A focused playthrough is roughly 40 minutes, according to a published hands-on impression. Players who stop to test combinations, inspect every object and read the responses can take closer to 90 minutes or two hours. There is no official completion time from HO! Games.

The correct question is not “how fast can I finish it?” The demo’s value is in the words you find along the way. Rushing the first conversation will get you to the bedroom quickly, but it will also leave you with a thinner vocabulary for the later tests.

Does the demo save your progress?

Do not assume it does. A developer reply in the Steam discussions says save/load is planned for the full release and may be considered for a demo update. The demo had no confirmed chapter-save system in the sources we reviewed.

Developer statement

In a Steam Community thread, the developer wrote: “We’re planning on adding a Save and Load function to the full release, but we’ll consider adding an update to the demo as well.” That is a plan, not a promise of a retroactive demo feature.Read the thread ↗

Plan for a single sitting. If you need to leave, leave the demo window open rather than assuming progress is preserved.

Performance and Steam Deck

The official minimum requirements are lightweight: Windows 10, an Intel Core i3-4150, 2 GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics and 1 GB of storage. The demo also had a Mac build. This is not a technically demanding 3D game; the presentation is built around 2D art, layered scenes and interface panels.

A 2025 preview reported that the interface did not line up correctly on Steam Deck at the time. We have not verified current Steam Deck compatibility. If the word-dragging interface is central to the game, a desktop or laptop with a mouse is the safer choice until Valve or the developer publishes a Deck rating.

Demo scope is from HO! Games’ September 5, 2026 update; full-game word count and endings are the developer’s stated targets, not independently reviewed features.

Content warnings

The demo carries the same mature-content description as the full game: implied violence towards a child, eye mutilation, child neglect, and imagery of bugs, spiders and worms. The final demo sequence is particularly intense and does not soften its subject matter.

Our demo walkthrough identifies where the most intense scene occurs without reproducing explicit imagery. Thebeginner’s guide sticks to mechanics and stays largely spoiler-free.

Where to go next

Do not buy a demo key

The demo is free. If you see someone selling “demo access” or a download link outside Steam, treat it as unofficial. The only official download we can verify is theSteam demo page.
